History of Indian Motorcycle®

Indian Motorcycle® is a motorcycle brand that's been around for over 100 years! The company's story is full of twists and turns, which we discuss below.

The Start of the Story

George Hendee spent a few years creating motorcycles, then partnered with Oscar Hedstrom. Together, they created three prototype motorcycles. These motorcycles were successful and helped increase sales for Hendee's company.

In 1902, the first Indian production models were made. These bikes had an eye-catching sleek frame. A year later, an Indian bike set the world motorcycle speed record. Then, the first Indian Motorcycle V-twin factory racer set records. Later, the V-twin found its way onto street models and roadsters.

 

The War Effort

When World War 1 arrived, the United States government bought Indian motorcycles for the war effort. 

Unfortunately, that meant that there were fewer motorcycles for customers to buy. Eventually, many Indian Motorcycle dealerships went out of business. At the same time, other motorcycle companies started making bikes and took over the market that Indian Motorcycle used to have.

Changing Directions

When World War 2 ended, a group of people led by Ralph B. Rogers bought a controlling share of the company. He changed the company's direction by discontinuing many of their more successful lines and focused instead on building lightweight bikes. 

This approach proved unsuccessful and by 1953, all product manufacturing had ended. The Indian Motorcycle brand went back and forth between different controlling groups, each one giving the company a different name and design.

Polaris Industries announced in April 2011 that it would acquire Indian Motorcycle. In 2013, the company expanded out to include ten models. Indian Motorcycles today offer plenty of power, speed, agility, and style - just like the original bikes did!
