Riding a motorcycle is incredibly thrilling—riding as a passenger is no less. That’s why riding "two-up" is more popular than you might think. If you plan to undertake a motorcycle riding trip as a passenger, here are a few safety tips to help you stay safe as a pillion passenger.

Follow these tips to enhance your experience and make your outing safe and memorable for both you and your buddy. If you have more questions or want to get a new motorcycle for yourself, come down to Mission City Indian Motorcycle®. Our dealership is in Boerne, TX, where we happily welcome our friends from San Antonio, Austin, and Corpus Christi.

Wear Proper Gear

Wearing proper gear is mandatory for riders and passengers, as well. Before you get on the bike, wear a well-fitted DOT-approved helmet, a riding suit, and a pair of close-toed shoes, goggles, and gloves.

Use Hand Signals

If you shout to communicate, you might distract the rider and cause an accident—instead, you will want to use hand signals to communicate. For example, you can tap on your rider's right shoulder to signal that you want to stop when convenient or tap twice to signify urgency. It will be a good idea to practice beforehand, so you both know what the different signals mean.

Additional Tips

Although your driver will want to make the ride as comfortable as possible, you will want to ensure that you:

  • Prepare for stops and try not to slam the back of your rider.
  • Avoid leaning too little or too much at turns and making the bike unstable.
  • Get off the motorcycle only when your rider tells you to do so.
