With over 260,000 square miles of land, Texas is the second-largest state in the country by area. For avid motorcyclists, this means an almost endless selection of winding backroads and desert highways that are perfect for a sunny afternoon ride.

Whether you’re a lifelong Texan or a recent transplant to the Lone Star State, if you’re a motorcycle rider, you’ll want to know some of the best places to take your bike for a spin. As your premier Austin-area Indian Motorcycle® dealer, Mission City Indian Motorcycle® in Boerne is here to provide you with a smattering of rides you can try out next weekend.

Willow City Loop (Fredericksburg, TX)

This 20-mile scenic route begins outside of Fredericksburg in central Texas and is eloved by Texas motorcyclists and bicyclists. If you love wildflowers, then you’ll love all the beautiful flowers growing on the hills along this route, including Texas bluebonnets, Indian paintbrushes and other colorful blooms. Make sure that you watch out for cows in the road, as well as occasional traffic from tourists.

Motorcyclists can also take advantage of the interesting bars along this route. The route also cuts through the Texas Hill Country American Viticultural Area, which boasts approximately 50 wineries and vineyards, so you can stop for a tasting—just be responsible about your consumption!

Texas Hills Loop (Bandera, TX)

Just to the west of our dealership here in Boerne, you can start this 60-mile route in Bandera, widely considered to be the “Cowboy Capital of Texas.” In Bandera, you can see rodeos during the summer or visit the Frontier Times Museum to learn about the history of Texas settlements.

To begin your journey from Bandera, take Route 16 west to Route 470 South, towards the town of Tarpley. From here, you can catch Route 187 to go south to Utopia, which is in the heart of Texas Hills country. You’ll take Route 1050 west to Route 83 all the way to Route 39 east, which eventually becomes Route 27 as it heads to Kerrville. From here, follow Route 16 north into Fredericksburg, which is filled with tourist attractions worth seeing, including a variety of museums.

The Three Sisters (Medina, TX)

If you want a longer ride, try this 130-mile loop that begins in the town of Medina. Take Ranch Road 337 (RR337) west out of town and towards Leake, where you can travel north on US 83 for a mile to jump onto RR336 on your left. This route will wind north to Texas 41, which you can take left to continue going west for about 15 miles. Turn left onto RR335 and head south to Camp Wood, where you’ll hop back onto RR337 back into Leakey. The clear rivers, twisting mountain curves and Texas ranches you pass along the way provide you with all the gorgeous scenery you could want.  Just make sure you fill up your tank and your stomach before you bein, as there aren’t many gas stations or other amenities along the route. During the hot summer, you can also take a swim in the brisk Frio River to cool down.

Of course, with thousands of miles of roads, this is only a very small sampling of Texas’ motorcycle routes, but our list should give you some great places to start that aren’t too far out of the way.
