You’re never too young to learn about motorcycle safety, and many riders have children that are a chip off the old block. Kids love shiny things, and nothing inspires their sense of imagination and adventure more than a beautiful motorcycle with a custom paint job and lots of shiny chrome! Riding with children is a great way to share your passion with your kids, and it's perfectly legal. Here are a few easy things to do to prepare you and your young passengers for a thrilling and safe riding experience. If you have any other questions, visit us at Mission City Indian Motorcycle® in Boerne, Texas, serving San Antonio, Austin and Corpus Christi, Texas.

Gear Up!

It might be fun to take a picture of your kids wearing your helmet for your friends in your club, but they will need their own helmet if they’re going to ride with you. The helmet should fit their head snugly, cover their whole head and include a chin-bar. If the helmet doesn’t include a built-in faceshield, the child will need to wear goggles.

All-weather protective clothing is also a must. Your kids will need a thick leather or denim jacket and pants and protective riding gloves that fit snugly on their little hands.

Teach Your Children the Correct Riding Position

It’s both dangerous and illegal for your children to sit up front when riding a motorcycle. It interferes with the rider’s ability to control the bike and increases the risk of the child falling off. Your children will need to ride behind you and you should be sure their seat is firmly attached. If you have very small children, passenger belts with handholds or a child riding belt will ensure that the child is secure throughout the ride.

Ride for Two

You should always be sure your bike is properly licensed and insured and you know all of your local traffic laws. Be sure to comply with any passenger age restrictions and safety equipment requirements. If you can’t find a helmet small enough for your child, he or she is probably still too young to go riding with you. Always ride defensively and remember that your bike will handle differently when you’re carrying a passenger.

Be patient with your kids as they learn bike safety. Teach them safety procedures over and over again until they become automatic. Practice getting on and off the bike with them and show them where to put their feet and hands. Learn to communicate while you ride and teach your children to always treat the motorcycle with respect.
